Newcastle United will receive a huge £50 million transfer to the Premier League giants

Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino became the latest player to help Spain reach the semi-finals with a late extra-time goal as Spain beat Germany in the European Cup quarter-finals. Players added to the list of international heroes. Spain defeated France in that round and the final awaits them against either England or the Netherlands.

However, many people may forget that Merino was actually a Premier League star for Newcastle United a few years ago. The Spanish midfielder made just 25 appearances for the Magpies before moving to Real Sociedad for £12 million, where his career began in earnest.

Since his transfer in 2019, Merino has played 242 times for the Spanish national team and has become a regular player for the Spanish national team. He has played 27 times for the Spanish national team so far. The 28-year-old’s outstanding performances in recent years and at Euro 2024 have seen him return to the attention of many of Europe’s top clubs and even some Premier League giants, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United all reportedly interested in the midfielder.

arsenal interest

The north London side appear to be most interested in the former Newcastle United man, with a report in Football Transfer that Mikel Arteta has asked the club to sign the Merino player this summer.

It’s no surprise that some big clubs are interested in Merino, who is a versatile left-footed midfielder capable of playing as a deep-lying midfielder or even as a senior option, as we’ve seen in recent days. With Thomas Partey leaving Arsenal this summer, Arteta may view Merino as an ideal partner for Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard in midfield.

potential price tag

According to transfermarkt, Merino is currently worth around £50 million, but it is expected that his transfer price may be slightly cheaper this summer. His current contract with the Spanish club expires in June 2025, meaning he has less than 12 months left on his contract with the club. Therefore, a bid of between £35-40m may be enough to convince the Spanish side to part ways with the 28-year-old this summer.

You would normally think that the Premier League’s top clubs might target a player slightly younger than Merino, but if they feel he would fit well into their system then a deal could be done.

Other spanish talents

The same report from Football Transfers claims that Mikel Arteta is a big fan of Nico Williams, who has a release clause of around £58m effective this summer. However, Williams’ wage demands could prove to be a major stumbling block to a potential move for the young forward this summer.

Merino’s midfield partner Dani Olmo has also been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League, with Chelsea and Liverpool both “interested”. Reports suggest Chelsea would prefer to trigger the £50m clause in the Spaniard’s current contract with RB Leipzig, while Liverpool are still weighing their options ahead of the Premier League season.
