Premier League champions lined up: How Arsenal and Manchester City are crowned champions

The top two teams in the Premier League have both played 36 games, but the gap between them remains slim as we enter the final week of the season.

Manchester City beat Fulham 4-0 on Saturday to move two points ahead of Arsenal with goals from Josco Gvaldiol (two), Phil Foden and Julian Alvarez at Craven Cottage , this game reduced the Gunners’ huge goal difference advantage.

Arsenal return to action on Sunday to face Manchester United – a stadium that has not been kind to them in the past – with just one win in their last 16 games at Old Trafford.

With such a slim margin deciding who will lift the Premier League title next Sunday, Competitor Destroy the game.

What if two teams have the same points?

If Arsenal and Manchester City have the same points, the championship will be decided based on goal difference. If there is still no difference, compare the number of goals scored, then the team that won the most points in the head-to-head matches, then the team that scored the most away goals in the head-to-head matches.

If so, Arsenal has a positive advantage over Manchester City. Arsenal beat Manchester City 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium in October, before a goalless draw at the Etihad Stadium in March.

  • Manchester United (A) – May 12 (4.30pm BST, 11.30am ET, 8.30am PT)
  • Everton (H) – May 19 (4pm BST, 11am ET, 8am PT)

How Manchester City won the title

On the surface, City’s task is relatively simple: win their remaining two games and they will be crowned Premier League champions for the fourth consecutive year. No team in the top flight of English football has achieved such an achievement.

Given that they are two points ahead of Arsenal, Manchester will need to equal or surpass their rivals’ results in their final two games.

However, if City lose or draw with Tottenham on Tuesday, the door is open for Arsenal ahead of the final round – assuming they beat Manchester United on Sunday.

If Arsenal do beat Manchester United, the title race will continue until the final day of the season, regardless of the outcome of Manchester City’s match against Tottenham. If City fail to beat Spurs, they will head into the final day with a low goal difference where they will need to surpass Arsenal’s result to have any chance of lifting the Premier League trophy. If both sides win their last game, Manchester City must win at least one more goal to equal the goal difference.

Manchester City can beat Tottenham Hotspur to win the title if Arsenal lose or draw at Old Trafford.

If Arsenal lose to Manchester United and Manchester City and then face Tottenham, the championship will also be decided again next Sunday. City then need to equal or better Arsenal’s results to get ahead of them.

How Arsenal won the title

After Manchester City defeated Fulham, Arsenal knew they actually had to win two games to have any chance of claiming a first Premier League title since 2003-04.

If Arsenal beat Manchester United, City will miss out on the title against Tottenham as they will fall a point behind Mikel Arteta’s side heading into Tuesday’s game.

Things will get more complicated if Arsenal lose or draw against Manchester United.

If Arsenal beat Manchester United…

Defeating Erik ten Hag’s side would be huge for Arsenal’s title chances and put huge pressure on Manchester City ahead of the game. Arsenal will be one point ahead of Manchester City ahead of Tuesday’s game.

If City lose to Tottenham, Arsenal will need to equal or better on the final day.

If City draw with Tottenham, they will be level on points with Arsenal but behind on goal difference. Arsenal will need to equal or better City’s result again on the final day, but if both teams win, Arteta’s side will need to win by enough to maintain their lead on goal difference.

If City beat Tottenham, they would move two points ahead of Arsenal. Arsenal need to win and hope Manchester City can’t do the same on the final day against West Ham United. A draw between Manchester City and Tottenham would once again work in Arsenal’s favor due to goal difference.

If Arsenal draw with Manchester United…

A draw against Manchester United means Arsenal will be one point behind Manchester City.

If Manchester City lose to Tottenham, Arsenal will need a better result on the final day to be crowned. Again due to their goal difference, Arsenal could win the title if they draw with Everton and Manchester City lose to West Ham United.

Should Manchester City draw with Tottenham, Arsenal will once again be two points behind them heading into the final day. That means they need to win and hope City draw or lose, with goal difference once again a potential advantage for Arsenal.

If Arsenal lose to Manchester United…

A defeat at Old Trafford would leave Arsenal two points behind Manchester City.

If City then loses to Tottenham, Arsenal will need to beat Everton and hope City cannot beat West Ham. Arsenal’s superior goal difference means they can afford to hold Manchester City to a draw in their final game.

If Manchester City draw with Tottenham, Arsenal will go into the final day three points behind them. This means Arsenal need to beat Everton and hope Manchester City lose to West Ham to win the title.

If Manchester City beat Tottenham, Guardiola’s side will win the title before the final day.
