West Ham, Wolves to play in Jacksonville


The Premier League returns to the First Coast for the first time in almost a decade.

English football clubs West Ham United and Wolves will play a preseason match at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville on July 27 at 7 p.m.

The match was part of the inaugural America’s Cup, a three-team tournament that also featured London’s Crystal Palace. The other games in the series will be held in Annapolis, Maryland on July 31 and in Tampa on August 3.

London-based West Ham United and Wolves currently sit ninth and 12th respectively in the 2023-24 Premier League table, with two weeks to go. Mathematically, both are guaranteed to retain Premier League status in the 2024-25 season.

This game is the first since July 26, 2014 between Fulham under Jaguars owner Shad Khan and Major League Soccer’s DC United. The first Jacksonville game involving an English club since United.

This will be the first game in which a team is actively involved in the Premier League since Leicester City faced the Jacksonville Cyclones on May 26, 1998.

Tickets go on sale to supporters of each club on Friday and to the general public on Monday.

Club Profile: West Ham United

West Ham United, founded under its current name in 1900, plays in London’s East End and in a stadium built for the 2012 Olympics. They have remained in the Premier League since 2012.

While West Ham have yet to win the top-flight title, the Hammers (the club’s traditional nickname) fared better in cup competitions, winning the 2023 UEFA Europa League title. and 1980.

Head coach David Moyes’ contract expires at the end of the season and he will be replaced in the summer by Julen Lopetegui, who led Wolves in 2022 and 2023. National team winger Jarrod Bowen, Czech national team captain Tomas Soucek and Mexican midfielder Edson Alvarez.

Club Profile: Wolves

Wolves, commonly known as Wolverhampton Wanderers, were one of the 12 clubs that founded the English Football League in 1888.

The club is headquartered in the West Midlands, England, west of Birmingham. Wolves won the English First Division (the top league before the establishment of the Premier League in 1992) three times and won the FA Cup in 1893, 1908, 1949 and 1960.

Led by Gary O’Neill, the Wolves’ most famous players include Brazil’s Matheus Cunha, South Korea’s Hwang Hee-chan and Spain’s Pablo Sarabia, all of whom are active in their respective national teams.

The Wolves also scheduled a game in Jacksonville 43 years ago, in 1981 at the old Gator Bowl against the Jacksonville Tea Men of the North American Football League.
