Forgotten former Premier League star, 30, opens door to Wrexham move after once being tipped to move to England

Forgotten Premier League striker Saido Berahino has admitted he would be willing to join new League One side Wrexham this summer.

It comes after the Wales-based club were promoted for the second consecutive year after winning the National League title last season.

Berahino currently plays for Cypriot team AEL Limassol, but his contract expires this summer.

The 30-year-old has scored 24 goals in 47 games across England’s U16 to U21 age groups.

He burst onto the scene at West Brom and caught the imagination with 11 goals in his first season, even scoring the historic winner in the Knickerbockers’ 2-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford in 2013.

He has now refused to rule out a return to England.

However, after submitting a transfer request, he lost form with the Lightbags and his career soon collapsed.

Towards the end of his £12m spell at Stoke City, Berahino switched allegiance to the country of his birth, Burundi, where he now captains.

He did join Sheffield Wednesday for an undisclosed fee before Cyprus, having previously worked with then manager Darren Moore at West Brom.

He scored nine goals on Wednesday before being released after being eliminated from the 2021 play-offs.

But the 30-year-old Berahino has scored 23 goals and provided three assists in 133 Premier League games.

Meanwhile, former Premier League striker Steven Fletcher has enjoyed a fine season since joining Wrexham last summer.

Wrexham’s weekly wage bill in 2023-24 is higher than all but five teams in the division above.

Berahino’s former West Brom and Stoke City team-mate James McClean has signed a new contract with the Hollywood-owned club.
