1 in and 1 out, Liverpool confirms its first new opponent in the 2024/25 season-Liverpool Football Club

At the weekend, one team was promoted, another was relegated to next season’s Premier League, while a familiar face returned from the Championship.

While Liverpool’s title hopes were all but over with a 2-2 draw with West Ham, it was a decisive weekend elsewhere.

Leicester City sealed their return to the Premier League on Friday night after a 4-0 defeat at promotion rivals Leeds United to QPR meant the Foxes failed to finish in the top two.

After being relegated to the Championship last season, they regained their place in the top flight at the first time they asked for it.

The last automatic promotion spot in the Championship will go to either Leeds United or Ipswich Town, with Southampton already guaranteed a place in the play-offs.

Meanwhile, Sheffield United’s relegation from the Premier League is now confirmed following Saturday’s 5-1 defeat at Newcastle.

Sheffield United have been in decline all season and are finally officially back in the Second Division after picking up just 16 points from 35 games.

That’s at least five points better than the worst points tally in Premier League history, a record still held by Derby County, who managed just 11 points in the 2007/08 season.

Burnley and Luton are the favorites to be relegated along with Sheffield United. This will be the second time in history that all three promoted teams have been relegated.

However, the situation is less clear for Everton and Nottingham Forest, who have found themselves docked points for spending irregularities.

The Premier League has vowed to resolve the two clubs’ appeals process before the final day on May 19 – which could theoretically increase the number of points deducted.
