Cole Palmer’s importance to Chelsea has been shockingly highlighted as new statistics show where the Blues would be in the Premier League table without their star player.

The 21-year-old England international has impressed since moving to Stamford Bridge from Manchester City this summer and is currently in the running for the English top flight’s Player of the Season award.

Palmer is currently tied with former Manchester City team-mate Erling Haaland in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot on 20 goals and is expected to be included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

While Palmer has had an outstanding season, it has been a difficult one for Chelsea and manager Mauricio Pochettino, who faces increasing pressure.

Palmer’s absence was widely noticed as the Blues beat arch-rivals Arsenal 5-0 on Tuesday to move the Gunners top of the Premier League table.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino denies his side are too reliant on Palmer this season

The visitors at the Emirates Stadium were outplayed by Mikel Arteta’s title-chasing side and struggled to create chances with Palmer unavailable as he recovers from illness.

His 17 assists in all competitions also make him Chelsea’s most creative player this season, with Palmer alone contributing 47.5% of the club’s Premier League goals this season.

In fact, Chelsea is in 18th place in the league standings with just 27 points after 32 games, facing relegation.

Pochettino stressed after the defeat to Arsenal that his side were not overly reliant on Palmer’s talent, but admitted not being able to select him was “difficult”.

“I guess we can’t say right now that this is the reason [Arsenal beat Chelsea because of Palmer]because we lost the game,” he told TNT Sports.

“But you lost a creative player who helped connect all the lines of the team.

“The most difficult scenario is that we are losing players and that makes it very difficult for the management,” he added.
