Villa and Spurs have distinguished themselves from the rest and will compete against each other for a place in Europe’s elite.

Here, takes an in-depth look at the race for the Champions League…

Tottenham Hotspur need just two wins to catch Aston Villa

Aston Villa – fourth place

Villa have had an incredible season and are in pole position in the race for fourth place.

Unai Emery’s side have started the new year with eight consecutive home wins, with a win over Arsenal in early December putting them in contention for the title race.

Since then, their form has declined, and a few days after losing 4-1 away to Manchester City, they drew 3-3 at home with Brentford.

The Londoners took the initiative last month when Tottenham were beaten 4-0 at a crucial moment for the team.

However, an incredible win against Arsenal changed their outlook on the Champions League.

Villa have since beaten Bournemouth and are now six points adrift of Tottenham, with their rivals having two games remaining.

  • Brighton – A – May 4
  • Liverpool – H – May 11
  • Crystal Palace – A – May 19

Tottenham Hotspur – 5th place

Tottenham Hotspur have been a breath of fresh air under Ange Postecoglou in his first season as Premier League manager.

They have scored 65 goals so far in their first season without talisman Harry Kane – only five teams have scored more.

Spurs have been free all season and James Maddison and Mickey van de Veen have also proven to be excellent signings.

Inconsistent performances have cost them at times this year, with first good results and then bad results leaving them with little hope of finishing in the top four.

They still have two games against Villa which will be crucial, but they still have to face Premier League title rivals Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Again, these games are likely to decide their fate, although Villa have the upper hand heading into the final few games.

Newcastle United – 6th

Suddenly, Newcastle had a chance to qualify for the Champions League.

The Magpies have endured a difficult season, with Eddie Howe’s side devastated by injuries and the Toon boss losing his options on the pitch.

Key players such as Nick Pope, Sven Botman, Joelinton, Harvey Barnes and Callum Wilson have all missed large parts of the season with long-term issues, while Sandro To Nally was banned for engaging in illegal gambling activities.

The fact that Newcastle even have a chance of playing in any European football competition next season is incredible, but a place in UEFA’s top competition is within reach after returning to form after the international break.

On paper, the Magpies look good away at Old Trafford and at home to Brighton in their toughest remaining fixtures.

But Newcastle are scoring so many goals that it could cause problems for any team, and they have two games before Tottenham face Arsenal.

However, despite their late-season form, a top-four finish may elude them this year.

Manchester United – 7th

After finishing third in Erik ten Hag’s first season as United manager last year, the future looks bright for the Red Devils.

However, it has been a largely forgettable campaign for United.

They crashed out of the Champions League, are bottom of their group, have never been in the title race and the odds of finishing in the top four remain slim.

After a humiliating 3-4 loss to Chelsea, Liverpool fought back 2-2 but ended up drawing 2-2 with Bournemouth, still losing further points to the top two teams. Chance.

So while the run-in from here on out is slightly easier than on paper, the gap is too big to close the gap on the top four.
