Two Premier League players arrested on rape charges

Police have reportedly arrested two Premier League players on suspicion of rape.

The Sun reports that the two unnamed players from the same club were arrested over the weekend.

A 19-year-old player is being questioned by police on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting rape.

The Sun’s report added that after a brief interview he was allowed to leave the club’s stadium before being formally arrested.

He then spent the night in a police cell where detectives questioned him under caution.

The player’s teammates of the same age were also arrested the next day and questioned on suspicion of rape.

Police confirmed on Monday night that both players had been released on bail pending further inquiries.

The rape is alleged to have occurred on Friday evening, hours after the victim contacted police and lodged a formal complaint.

A police spokesman told The Sun: “Police arrested two men following reports of a rape.”

“A 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault, aiding and abetting rape.

“Another 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape. Both men have been released on police bail.

Otherwise, a club spokesman said: “As the matter is now being referred to the police, the football club will make no further comment at this stage.”

It is unclear whether the two players have been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
